German Traditions with Food

German food has great prominence in the everyday cultural events and traditions in Germany. Most celebrations, whether they are in public or private, will be accompanied by exquisite food, and great tasting beer.

German cuisine varies significantly from region to region. Certain specialty dishes have even been made famous by individual towns and villages. For instance, the Nurnberger bratwurst is a well known sausage from Nurnberg. On the other hand, the Weiswurst is a famous sausage from Munich. Amazingly, these delicacies are available from the simplest of places. You can enjoy world famous food from the temporary carts set up at the local market place, or sometimes even at a cart at the local train station.

There is also great rivalry between the regions as to who has the superior German recipes. There has always been strong rivalry between the northern and southern regions of Germany. There is always a healthy rivalry amongst opposing citizens as to who has claim to the best food recipes.

Germany is world famous for sausages and sauerkraut.  However there are a huge amount of German foods on offer that most people of other nations wouldn’t even be aware of. Among them are various of potato salads and potato dumplings dishes, that are usually accompanied by the most unique flavored meat dishes. Of little known fact is the vast array of fresh German salads recipes accompanied by scrumptious dressings.

And lest we forget those who enjoy their sweets, the quality and selections of cakes and pastries available is unrivalled. Mouth water layer cakes, unrivalled anywhere in the world can be enjoyed at almost any cafe.

Regrettably, knowing how to cook the traditional German recipes is slowly being forgotten. Large food outlets now conveniently sell the more traditional German dishes. Dishes such as German dumplings, sauerbraten, and sauerkraut are all sold as ready to cook. Amazing cakes along with fine pastries can be purchased from even the smallest of bakeries.

As a result of such convenience, our present generation harldy knows where to begin to prepare a traditional German meal.

German culture has very strong links with German food. The risk is that German food culture may disappear if the art of German cooking is not revitalized. This should be of concern for those living in Germany. Germans living in other countries around the world, along with their descendants, face these issues even more so.

We must be vigilant in our efforts to keep the German food culture alive. Therefore, take the time and make the effort to teach the young ones the recipes and cooking techniques of old. In doing so, not only will German food continue to be served, but German traditions and culture will continue to survive.
